Total Production Of NIKKOR Lenses For Nikon SLR Cameras Reaches Sixty Million
MELVILLE, N.Y. (April 5, 2011) – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that total production of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras has reached 60 million in March 2011.
In 1959, Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first SLR camera, the Nikon F. At the same time, Nikon also released its first NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras, among them the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2. In the half century since, NIKKOR lenses have become the favorite lenses of a wide variety of users, and have been extremely well received by a great number of photo enthusiasts and professional photographers.
In August 2010, total production of NIKKOR lenses reached 55 million. Since then, Nikon has continued to expand the product lineup by releasing six new NIKKOR lenses for FX- and DX-format SLR cameras. As a result, the fact that NIKKOR continues to satisfy a wide variety of photographers is evidenced by production of an additional five million lenses in less than one year, bringing total production to 60 million.
NIKKOR lenses released since August 2010
• AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR (released September 2010) An ultra high-power zoom lens with magnification of approximately 10.7× that covers a broad range of focal lengths from the wide-angle 28mm to the telephoto 300mm; equipped with Nikon’s latest vibration reduction system, VR II, which provides image stabilization equivalent to an approximately four-step increase in shutter speed. This lens is compatible with the FX format.
• AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G (released September 2010) A fast, mid-telephoto, fixed focal length (prime) lens that offers pleasing blur characteristics and superior resolution with a focal length of 85mm and fast maximum aperture of f/1.4. This lens is compatible with the FX format.
• AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR (released September 2010) An ultra high-power zoom lens with magnification of approximately 5.5× that covers the 55 mm to 300mm range of focal lengths; equipped with Nikon’s latest vibration reduction system, VR II, and high refractive index (HRI) lens elements. This lens is compatible with the DX format.
• AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR (released September 2010) A 5× standard zoom lens with a fixed maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range; utilizes Nano Crystal Coat and is equipped with Nikon’s latest vibration reduction system, VR II. This lens is compatible with the FX format.
• AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II (released October 2010) A fast, telephoto, fixed focal length (prime) lens with a focal length of 200mm and maximum aperture of f/2 that is equipped with Nikon’s latest vibration reduction system, VR II, and utilizes Nano Crystal Coat. This lens is compatible with the FX-format.
• AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G (released November 2010) A fast, wide-angle lens that exhibits superior image quality with shooting at f/1.4 maximum aperture; utilizes Nano Crystal Coat and is equipped with Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This lens is compatible with the FX format.
The NIKKOR brand
As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established — to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor.
NIKKOR has always been ahead of the times. The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world’s first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. What’s more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of Nikon’s own cutting-edge technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a rich variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses, micro lenses and PC-E lenses.

The Versatile New Nikon D5100 D-SLR Offers A New Perspective On Creativity
With a New Swing Out Vari-Angle LCD, Full HD Movie and New In-Camera Effects, The Nikon D5100 and ME-1 Stereo Microphone Provide the Tools and Inspiration to Create Stunning Photos and Movies
MELVILLE, N.Y. (April 5, 2011) – Today, Nikon announced the new 16.2-megapixel Nikon D5100 Digital SLR designed for those ready to artistically express themselves and need a versatile camera that can keep pace creatively. The Nikon D5100 D-SLR houses a host of new and innovative features aimed at giving photographers the tools to shatter creative constraints and tell stories with amazing image quality and stunning HD movies.
The Nikon D5100 includes features designed to enhance the shooting experience, including an impressive new 3-inch, super sharp 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD screen and full HD (1080p) movie recording with full-time autofocus. The 16.2-megapixel D5100 is also the first Nikon D-SLR to provide in-camera effects that can be applied to both photos and movies to deliver even more creative expression.
“Now more than ever, consumers want to pack only one device with them when travelling on excursions both far away and close to home,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of marketing at Nikon Inc. “By providing consumers with a simple path to creative freedom for both stills and movies, the Nikon D5100 is designed to become an essential camera for capturing all of life’s occasions.”
Ready for the Adventure of Life
The D5100 allows photographers of all levels to confidently execute new and creative ways to tell stories with amazing color and clarity. Whether shooting high over crowds or down low to a toddler’s point of view, the swing out style Vari-angle LCD screen makes it easy to compose and share great images. Displaying even the most subtle details with clarity, the super sharp LCD has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and 921,000-dot resolution, with the ability to rotate 180 degrees horizontally and vertically.
To further test creative boundaries, photographers can take advantage of the D5100’s in-camera Special Effects Mode. Applied to either stills or D-Movies, these innovative effects are easy to apply and add a high level of creativity and fun to the photo experience. By selecting the Effects position on the mode dial located on top of the camera, photographers can easily apply effects such as Selective Color and choose up to three different colors in a scene while the remainder of the scene is converted to monochrome. Color Sketch creates photos and a stop motion movie in a colorful sketched drawing style, while the Miniature effect records photos and high speed movies to bestow a feeling of a mini-scale scene. To record photos in extreme lighting conditions or to produce movies with a gritty appearance , the new Night Vision mode calls upon Nikon’s pro D-SLR performance to offer extreme low-light capability by enabling the camera to shoot up to a super-high 102,400 ISO. In addition to the Effects mode, users can create photos with amazing tonal range by selecting the high dynamic range (HDR) function within the camera. With this selected, the D5100 will automatically expose two consecutive images in rapid succession – one over and one underexposed up to 3EV stops to produce a finished photo with an amazing range of midtones and highlights that wouldn’t otherwise be possible in a single shot. Additionally, Active D-Lighting can be selected by itself or combined with HDR for an even more dramatic effect.
The versatile Nikon D5100 D-SLR will motivate shooters to further explore creatively with its advanced camera features including full manual controls (P,S,A,M on the mode dial) offering the ability to manage the camera’s aperture and shutter speeds. Once the photo is captured, photographers have the flexible retouch menu at their disposal to apply additional in-camera effects and editing options including color and filter effects, red eye correction and NEF (RAW) processing.
The remarkably wide ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to a staggering 25,600 ISO), allows photographers to shoot confidently in outdoor and indoor low-light situations, even handheld with low noise. In challenging lighting conditions such as when a subject is backlit, Nikon’s Active D-lighting feature helps to keep shadows and highlights consistent for even exposures.
To further unleash creativity, the Picture Control system also affords users the choice for Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, or Landscape settings to apply a personal look and feel to their pictures. Additionally, the versatile Scene Modes let them choose from Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close-up or Night Portrait and more for stunning results in just about all possible lighting conditions.
Create Full HD Movies
The Nikon D5100 captures 1080p full HD movies with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control. Users can quickly switch focus modes to stay with the action through a variety of AF functions, including face priority which can track up to 35 human faces, subject-tracking and normal or wide-area autofocus. To activate D-Movie mode and Live-view, a new switch is ergonomically located on the top of the camera near the shutter button for easy access.
The D5100 D-SLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions for movies, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24 or 30fps, or a web-friendly 720p resolution at either 24 or 30 fps for up to 20 minutes per clip, in the AVC-HD H.264 codec. Once recorded, movie clips can be edited and trimmed in the camera to save time in post production. Whether utilizing a wireless or hot shoe mounted microphone such as the new ME-1, sound can be recorded via the stereo microphone input for professional audio results. Captured movies can be easily shared using the HDMI output, and controlled remotely with HDMI CEC compatibility.
Superior Image Quality
The 16.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor is capable of capturing images that erupt with color and offer amazing sharpness and clarity to create images and full HD movies even in low-light conditions. Coupled with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED 2 image processing engine, images are brought to life with vivid colors and amazing contrast, accurate exposure, and low noise levels resulting in brilliant image quality. The EXPEED 2 engine also drives the quick 11-point AF system on the D5100 to provide rapid focus acquisition even on fast moving subjects. When shooting action, split second shutter response and four frames per second burst rate make sure no moment is missed, forever putting to rest the story of “the one that got away.”
Whether shooting lush wilderness landscapes or an urban skyline, the D5100 utilizes Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System to analyze subject information from a database containing more than 30,000 images to optimize focus, exposure, i-TTL flash exposure and white balance. To assist in creating amazing imagery, the Scene Recognition System reads data from the 420-pixel 3D Color Matrix Meter RGB sensor that examines the scene’s brightness and color data then optimizes the camera’s performance prior to the actual exposure.
An entirely greater world of creativity will open up to photographers when adding versatile AF-S NIKKOR lenses to the equation. With a wide range of focal lengths and versatile features, AF-S NIKKOR lenses help to create a variety of photo perspectives to images and movies such as the ability to isolate subjects with a shallow depth of field or zoom close to the action from afar. Combining the D5100 D-SLR with NIKKOR lenses also delivers the sharpness essential for HD movies, and Nikon’s innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) II technology helps to eliminate the effects of camera shake.
New ME-1 Microphone
To address the needs of the ever growing community of shooters abandoning their video cameras for the versatility of a D-SLR, Nikon now offers the ME-1 stereo microphone. Engineered specifically for a
D-SLR, the new ME-1 microphone attaches to the hot shoe and has noise dampening components designed to minimize noise resulting from AF operation. The microphone also has a low-cut filter to reduce wind and other noise not already blocked by the wind screen. Designed with D-SLR users in mind, the ME-1 is powered through the camera, and also features a cable stop to keep the cable out of the way when using the camera, and reduce instances of noise from unintentional contact. Because it utilizes a standard 3.5mm stereo jack, the ME-1 is ideal for the D5100 and other Nikon HD movie capable D-SLR’s such as the D3s, D300s, D7000, as well as the COOLPIX P7000 and any other camera with a 3.5mm stereo input jack.
Price and Availability
The D5100 D-SLR camera will be available throughout the United States beginning mid April 2011 at an estimated selling price* of $799.95 for the body only, and $899.95 for the body and lens outfit that includes the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. Nikon’s New High Performance COOLPIX P300 Overcomes Creative Constraints In Even The Most Challenging Lighting Conditions
The COOLPIX P300 Combines Nikon’s Cutting-Edge Imaging Technology with the Fastest NIKKOR Lens Ever Paired with a COOLPIX to Create an Exceptionally Enviable Pocket Camera
MELVILLE, NY (Feb. 8, 2011) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the new COOLPIX P300, Nikon’s first compact digital camera to feature a super-fast Wide-Angle 4.2x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens (24mm-100mm, 35mm equivalent) with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 for capturing stunning, tack-sharp images and Full HD (1080p) video in a variety of lighting conditions. In addition to the widest aperture NIKKOR lens ever seen in a Nikon COOLPIX camera, the P300 also comes equipped with a 12.2-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor as well as a complement of other Nikon core technologies designed to prevail in even the most challenging light.
Created for the photo enthusiast who seeks creative control but will not compromise image quality for portability, the versatile P300 features manual controls, Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, and ISO sensitivity up to 3200. These features help create low noise images and faster shutter speeds, which minimize motion blur in low-light conditions like night portraits, even when handheld.
“The COOLPIX P300 reflects decades of optical experience and NIKKOR heritage that culminate to create this exciting compact camera offering for users yearning for more creative freedom,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. “The P300 is an excellent choice for the photographer who is looking for a compact camera with all the manual controls and advanced features that challenges them to take their creativity to new heights.”
Stunning Image Quality in Low-Light Conditions
Demanding low-light conditions and creative barriers are no match for the new COOLPIX P300. Superior image quality in low-light settings is achieved because of the P300’s powerful combination of a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, high ISO sensitivity, and the fast wide-angle f/1.8 lens. The CMOS sensor in the P300 is designed so that each pixel receives light more efficiently for superior performance. ISO performance of up to 3200 helps to ensure that images have low noise and amazing clarity while the wide aperture increases the amount of available light to the sensor. Nikon’s EXPEED C2 image processing engine also participates in this phenomenal feat, enhancing overall speed and performance to deliver images that burst with vivid clarity and color.
Taking Creativity to New Heights
Designed to give users even more creative freedom in a compact body, the P300 comes equipped with several features commonly found in D-SLR cameras such Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Priority (S) and Full Manual (M) Control. Easily accessed through a top mounted control wheel, users are able to capture images missed by other cameras, while obtaining a desired look and feel to images by creatively adjusting shutter speed, depth of field, white balance and other settings. Users can also apply special effects to colors, and filter effects such as a cross screen or fisheye lens. The P300 also includes Nikon’s new Easy Panorama mode, to simply create vertical or horizontal panoramic shots automatically in-camera. Users can quickly and easily apply these settings, as well as review and share photos on the P300’s high resolution 921,000-dot, 3-inch LCD screen.
The new COOLPIX P300 also features several improved scene modes including Advanced Night Portrait mode, Night Landscape mode, and Backlight high dynamic range (HDR) mode. When Advanced Night Portrait mode is engaged, the camera captures the essence of night scenes by combining multiple background shots along with a subject flash shot. In Backlight HDR mode, the P300 combines multiple shots at different exposures while Night Landscape mode combines multiple shots taken with a faster shutter speed for reduced noise and improved tonal range throughout the photo.
While image quality and low-light shooting are main facets of the COOLPIX P300, the camera also has incredible video capabilities. The P300 records high quality Full HD 1080p movies at 30 frames-per-second (fps) with autofocus, stereo sound and the ability to use the optical zoom. With the P300, users will be able to easily access the camera’s video controls through its one-touch operation. Additionally, the Special Effects mode and a Creative Slider mode will allow ever more creative freedom when recording both movies and still images. Users can also adjust the recording speed of their movies to apply slow motion or high-speed special effects.
Additional COOLPIX Cameras Join the Low-Light Fight
In addition to the launch of the COOLPIX P300, Nikon also launched several other COOLPIX low-light all stars today, including the COOLPIX P500 and the S9100. Like the P300, the P500 and S9100 capture sharp, crisp images in demanding low-light conditions with accurate detail with the assistance of their backside illumination CMOS sensor and VR technology. The P500 also features Nikon’s first 36x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens with side zoom control and is versatile enough to capture photos that other cameras would miss. The S9100 is a full featured camera with a high-power 18x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens packed with high performance in a compact, sophisticated design for superior portability, which is equally stylish and useful.

Nikon Breaks The Zoom Barrier With A Trio Of New COOLPIX Cameras, Including The New COOLPIX P500 With A Vast 36x Zoom
Three New COOLPIX Models Offer Consumers High Power Zoom Lenses, Impressive Performance and Superior Image Quality
MELVILLE, NY (Feb. 8, 2011) – Invoking the NIKKOR legacy of unparalleled optics innovation, Nikon Inc. today unveiled three new high power super-zoom COOLPIX digital cameras, including the new COOLPIX P500 with a 36x zoom, the longest zoom ever integrated into a COOLPIX camera. For consumers who desire slim zoom or affordable telephoto, Nikon has also announced the new COOLPIX S9100 and L120 cameras to address the need for versatile, high performance compact cameras with easy-to-use functionality.
Whether capturing photos or HD video up close or from afar, Nikon’s new super-zoom COOLPIX cameras are ideal for cramped quarters or the great outdoors. The new COOLPIX P500 is a full-featured compact camera complete with an expansive 36x zoom for photo enthusiasts looking for their next big adventure, while the new COOLPIX S9100 packs an 18x zoom in a sleek body ideal for traveling light. Rounding out this impressive lineup, the new COOLPIX L120 combines a powerful 21x zoom with easy-to-use features for the ultimate family camera.
“Today’s consumers want an increase in zoom range, and a camera that is compact enough to never hinder a jet-set, on-the-go lifestyle. Nikon listened, and offers the best of both worlds with these three new COOLPIX models,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. “These three new COOLPIX models offer the shooting versatility that comes from the stellar NIKKOR lenses while still offering the portability of compact digital cameras.”
COOLPIX Technology
At the core of these new COOLPIX cameras are Nikon’s world-class NIKKOR lenses, delivering accurate detail, brilliant color and amazing clarity. Further enhancing color and sharpness, Nikon’s EXPEED C2™ high performance digital image processing engine is implemented and custom-optimized for each COOLPIX model to ensure high-quality pictures. With a variety of useful functions such as the Scene Auto Selector, Best Shot Selector and Smart Portrait System, the COOLPIX lineup is designed to help even the most inexperienced photographer take beautiful photos easily.
The New COOLPIX P500: Beyond Super-Telephoto
The COOLPIX P500 features a 36x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens, shattering the conventional zoom barrier to create the “ultra-telephoto” premium compact. From shooting super wide-angle 22.5mm to a staggering 810mm (35mm equivalent), the COOLPIX P500 is the best bet to capture the user’s intent with exceptional image quality, even in challenging low-light conditions thanks to the 12.1-megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor.
A first for the COOLPIX line of digital cameras, the P500 features the EXPEED C2 dual image processor that greatly enhances performance, reduces noise and corrects distortion in both movies and still images. With a 36x zoom, the need for an exceptional image stabilization system is essential for capturing steady subjects at such long focal lengths. For sharp photos and video, the COOLPIX P500 meets that need with its hybrid vibration reduction (VR) stabilization system comprised of both image-sensor shift VR and electronic VR. To further combat the effects of camera shake, an additional zoom control has been added to the side of the lens barrel to increase stability while shooting photos and video while handheld.
Utilizing the high-speed continuous shooting performance (capture five images at full resolution in approximately one second) of the CMOS sensor, the COOLPIX P500 includes Backlighting scene mode with an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) function, which merges images of the same scene at different exposures to achieve a single image with a broad range of tonal detail. For additional low-light performance, the Night Landscape mode combines a series of consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise when taking handheld shots in night scenes. Additionally, the advanced Night Portrait mode combines consecutive images of the background while the subject is captured using the flash to deliver beautiful night and indoor scenes.
To help users stay one step ahead of the action, a new shooting mode button facilitates quick setting of continuous frame shooting, in addition to the pre-shooting cache that starts to snap photos before the button is fully depressed. Additionally, The COOLPIX P500 features a variety of advanced functions for the sophisticated user seeking smooth control with intuitively placed controls such as a new mode dial that enables easy setting of frequently used functions on the fly.
Other notable functions include full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound and the ability to capture still images during recording, as well as the ability to utilize the expansive zoom range while recording with autofocus. The camera can also adjust recording speed to create slow motion or high-speed special effects. The P500 also features a new Easy Panorama mode that creates dynamic panorama photos with a choice of directions and angles, automatically. To facilitate easy composing, viewing and playback of images and HD movies, the COOLPIX P500 also features a 3-inch high resolution (921,000-dot) vari-angle monitor.
The New COOLPIX S9100: Pocketable Power Zoom
For the sophisticated traveler who needs portability and versatility, the new COOLPIX S9100 packs an impressive 18x wide-angle Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens into a stylish compact body – the most compact body of these three. From wide-angle (25mm) to super-telephoto (450mm), the COOLPIX S9100 captures everything from sweeping landscapes to distant subjects confidently. Ensuring exceptional image quality even when shooting in low-light conditions, the COOLPIX S9100 features a 12.1-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor and ISO sensitivity up to 3200. The S9100 also includes Backlighting scene mode with HDR functionality built-in, Night Landscape mode, Night Portrait mode and Nikon’s hybrid VR image stabilization system.
For effortless operation when composing or sharing, the COOLPIX S9100 features a 3-inch high resolution, 921,000-dot LCD monitor with an enhanced user interface that enables easy composing and viewing, as well as a mode dial for smooth setting of frequently used functions. The COOLPIX S9100 also includes full HD (1080p) movie recording with one-touch operation, optical zoom, stereo sound and the ability to capture still images during recording. Putting the fun in functionality, the COOLPIX S9100 has a new Easy Panorama mode and a variety of Special Effects for artistic photos and movies.
The New COOLPIX L120: Affordable Zoom Performance
Making it easy and affordable to capture memorable family moments, the new COOLPIX L120 features a 21x wide-angle Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens with side zoom control, 14.1-megapixel resolution, hybrid VR image stabilization system and high sensitivity up to ISO 6400 (reduced resolution) for beautiful photos in a variety of lighting conditions. The COOLPIX L120 also features an Easy Auto mode that automatically selects the most appropriate scene mode by simply framing the subject, allowing the user to capture photos confidently and preserve special moments forever.
